The Dipole-Charge Interaction
A rubber rod is charged by rubbing it briskly with a cloth. This process transfers electrons from one object to another (like picking up static electricity by walking across a carpet on a dry day). When the charged rod is brought up to a fine stream of water the dipoles of the water molecules are attracted to the charge and therefore the stream of water is bent toward the rod.
